Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.

Economic Development

In alignment with Delta Sigma Theta’s Five-Point Thrust, the North Atlanta Economic Development Committee focuses on developing Financial Fortitude, the current Economic Development program initiative. Financial Fortitude helps program participants set and define goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and put the plan into action. The ten components include Goal Setting, Financial Planning, Budgeting, Debt Management, Savings & Investments, Retirement Planning, Homeownership, Insurance, Estate Planning, and Entrepreneurship.

According to research from the Brookings Institute, Black businesses make up approximately 7% of the total businesses throughout the North Fulton service area, providing a rich environment to support, promote, and educate. Supporting entrepreneurship is a special area of focus for the North Fulton chapter, given the high percentage of Black-owned businesses throughout the area.

Education Development

The North Fulton Educational Development Committee plays an active role in inspiring, motivating, and supporting the aspirations and achievements of youth and young adults through the design and development of programs and activities to increase educational effectiveness in the proposed charter area.

In fulfilling the commitment to Delta Sigma Theta’s Five-Point Thrust, this committee promotes and enhances academic excellence through programs, tools, and scholarships that emphasize scholastic achievement and higher academic development, promote service learning, foster college preparation and planning, and award college scholarships to students in the North Fulton identified service area.

International Awareness and Involvement

The International Awareness and Involvement Committee leverages the diversity of the North Fulton area to develop community programs that promote cultural awareness, tolerance, and Umoja (unity); increase awareness of international affairs; and focus on issues that pose a threat to women and girls around the world.

Physical and Mental Health

The DeltaCare Initiative is an internal Delta Sigma Theta wellness initiative under the programmatic thrust of Physical and Mental Health. It promotes self-care through physical wellness, emotional wellness, and awareness/advocacy. Specifically, the Red S.H.O.E. challenge is the physical health component of DeltaCare that encourages members to engage in healthy behaviors. S.H.O.E. is an acronym for Self-care, Healthy Options, and Exercise.

The Physical and Mental Health committee implements programs and activities to improve the physical and mental well-being of the North Atlanta area, focusing on Black women and youth. Through a signature program entitled “Healthy People Living in Healthy Communities…Mind, Body and Spirit” and involvement in various activities, we proactively raise awareness on major health and wellness concerns that disproportionately impact the minority community. We are dedicated to reducing the disparity gaps that exist in our communities.

Political Awareness and Involvement

Social Action is the foundation of Delta Sigma Theta and serves as the impetus for all programs and activities executed by the North Fulton Political Awareness and Involvement committee. The committee’s mission is to give a voice to the voiceless, advocate for those in need, and embody the commitment of our oath. The committee implements a signature initiative entitled “Changing Perceptions: Need in North Fulton Community Forums” to pull back the veil on need in the area and identify support services available by working with local not-for-profit organizations and the interfaith community.
